Towards a New Democracy
“We must undergo major cultural changes to achieve a sustainable future yet our politicians still put their own and their national interest above global needs, leaving us unprepared for the future.” Derek Bates, scientist and writer, will introduce alternatives to the political systems we have and a different form of democracy which, as outlined in his book, ‘Shadows in the Walls’ will give us a direct voice in our own destinies.
Openness in Nordic Political Culture
Openness defined as transparency, accessibility and accountability of society’s decisions and decision-makers is frequently regarded as a typical trait of the Nordic countries and presented as a democratic model for Europe. In order to truly practice openness, scholars and citizens alike must engage in critical self-reflection on what it actually means and what kind of forms it takes in the Nordic countries, in the past as well as in the present. Open Government agencies and civil society, the right allies for an inside job
Nagore de los Ríos, Director of Open Government and Alberto Ortiz de Zarate, Director of Citizen Services, will review the internal resistances faced launching the basque open government strategy. One of the key issues was how to implement the proper incentives using the support of civil society to encourage cultural change within the administration (support of a crowdfunding platform, data journalism training programs or W3C’s membership, amongst others)

Carl Marklund: Carl Marklund is a historian and political scientist working at the Centre for Baltic and Eastern European Studies (CBEES) at Södertörn University and affiliated with the Network for European Studies (NES) at University of Helsinki. Nagore de los Rios: Nagore de los Rios, former radio journalist in three of the main spanish radio stations, covered political information in Bilbao during five years before starting to work for the Socialist Party as one of the chief Internet strategists in the Basque Country. Head of the first Open Government Unit in Spain, one of her main goals was to consolidate a strong relationship with digital civil society organizations in Spain (Access Info Europe, Crowdfunding platform Goteo or Fundación Civio, amongst others) in order to allow Open Government policies to deploy its full potential.
