CC HKI: INTRODUCTION

CC HKI is the first Creative Commons Film Festival in Finland. It will take place on Friday 21 September 2012 as a part of the Open Knowledge Festival in Helsinki in Helsinki.

CC HKI shows films licensed under a Creative Commons license. The CC licenses are a new way of intellectual property more flexible than traditional copyright and more adapted to the digital world.

Instead of Copyright “all rights reserved”, Creative Commons are “some rights reserved”. There are 6 Creative Commons licenses, from more restrictive to more open, that the authors can choose to decide which uses are allowed and which rights they want to keep. But always allowing the movies to be “shared” within the community on the way the author wants. He uses the license to explain how this creation can be used to his audience.

Behind the Creative Commons licenses, we see new models of creation, distribution and production of films. The distance between filmmakers and their audience disappear. There are not intermediaries. Audience is not passive anymore, they have an active role in distribution (sharing the films), production (crowdfunding, supporting economically the filmmaker to do the film) even in creation (making subtitles, remixing…).

One thing is clear: films models are changing, and there is not a unique model. In CC HKI we explore the models that we find interesting watching films, and also doing alternative activities such as conferences.

We don’t think that quality is something related to the license. We want to show than quality on creative commons films is as good as it can be in a copyrighted one. What it changes is the model, not the quality of the cinema.

BCCN Barcelona Creative Commons Film Festival : COPY THIS FESTIVAL!
