The Climate Hacking workshop brought together emerging researchers, designers and artists dedicated to reframing the international political climate by means of hacking Cotton Candy machines. Using both old and new technologies, live internet data streams and a diverse collection of hacking skills, the participants produced a set of dynamic and playful art objects for public exhibition during the Transmediale 09 festival in Berlin, Germany.

The international workshop was realised as a collaboration project between Pixelache, Tinker LTD and Kitchen Budapest.

Spaceship Earth / Pixelache09

Photo: Terike Haapoja / ‘Closed circuit – Open duration’ exhibition

Earth is the only vessel that humankind has and we should learn how to be good pilots (as soon as possible). This idea was often featured in writings of architect / inventor Buckmister Fuller (’Buckie’) who wanted to challenge the conventional ideas we have about design and engineering.

The Spaceship Earth programme of Pixelache09 explored how relevant these ideas are today, when ubiquitous computing and climate crisis are emerging simultaneously. The programme consisted of a workshop, a seminar and an exhibition in Lasipalatsi, Helsinki. The participants included Chris Burman / Pachube, Terike Haapoja, Tapio Mäkelä / M.A.R.I.N, Miska Knapek, Anu Osva / Ars Bioarctica, Bengt Sjölén and many others.

Capsula / Expedition to the Total Eclipse

Expedition to the Total Eclipse in Kiasma Mediatheque (Helsinki, Finland) is an exhibition about Capsula’s cross-disciplinary expedition to the zone of the total solar eclipse in Siberia, in August 2008. It premieres artworks created during the expedition by Agnes-Meyer Brandis (DE), Mireia C. Saladrigues (ES) and Tommi Taipale (FI).

Through this project Capsula curator and producer Ulla Taipale would like to raise questions related with our relation with the surrounding natural and artificial environments.  Could the natural phenomenon and the spectacles of the nature still fascinate a major quantity of people in the modern world, saturated by entertainment like video games and action movies? And, could these splendid and thrilling emotions lived within the nature, shift the attitude of people to more respectful and caring direction concerning their environment?

Expedition to the Total Eclipse was a Pixelache09 production residency organised in collaboration with HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Residency Programme.

Nuage Vert

Nuage Vert

Nuage Vert is a large-scale environmental installation by HeHe (Helen Evans & Heiko Hansen), realised for the first time in Helsinki in February 2008. During one week, the vapour emissions of the Salmisaari power plant in Helsinki were illuminated during the night time with the help of a laser ray, to show the current levels of electricity consumption by the residents of the surrounding neighbourhood.

The artwork was produced by Pixelache in collaboration with Helsingin Energia energy company, the City of Helsinki and many other local partners. Nuage Vert was awarded a Golden Nica of the Prix Ars Electronica 2008 and the Environmental Artwork of the Year 2008 Award by the Finnish Environmental Art Foundation.
