CULTURAL EXCHANGE>>>SOUTH / NORTH
COLOMBIA / FINLAND / EUROPE / THE WORLD

Creating encounters to share ideas and knowledge between…

South * North
‘Developing countries’ * ‘Developed countries’
Traditional culture * Western culture
Marginalized communities * International creative networks
Natural/Organic * Digital/Synthetic
Lo-tech * High-tech
Slow * Quick

Intermundos and Pixelache are working together to develop more exchange between Colombian artists and the international electronic art scene. Colombia, as well as many other countries in South-America, have so far been left out from the Western media art events and we believe that both communities have a lot to learn from each other.

The goals of Pixelazo are:

  • To make possible exchanges between artists from the Southern and Northern hemisphere.
  • To introduce electronic art and culture to populations that have not had an opportunity to come into contact with these forms of expression. Ex.; marginalized communities; rural population; indigenous communities.
  • To promote multidisciplinary collaborations through involvement of scientists, media professionals, philosophers, indigenous people, writers etc.
  • To introduce alternative spaces for working with and showing electronic art.
  • To share and multiply knowledge through conferences, round table discussions and theoretical or practical workshops.
  • To generate encounters that foster creativity and plural and multidimensional thought.

PIXELAZO MEDELLIN
13-20 June, 2007
Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia

The eight days of Pixelazo feature workshops, conferences and public events in parks and schools, concentrated in one of the communes (marginal neighborhoods) of Medellin. The goal is to introduce the local audience to electronic art and the idea of open communication tools and technologies.

Pixelache Medellin workshops are hosted by artists and people working with independent media from Colombia and abroad, who also have a chance to present their work as an exhibition or live performance.

PIXELAZO WARM UP ACTIVITIES
5 events, 1 monthly from January to May 2007
Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia.

In order to familiarize a public with little or no knowledge of electronic art and culture, Intermundos will organize a monthly activity related to this movement, during the five months preceding the main Pixelazo event. These activities will take place in one of the communes (marginal neighborhoods) of Medellin and will involve in each case; a conference, a workshop and a performance or exhibit. Through this process we will be able to locate the young people in the different neighborhoods of Medellin whom are already working with media, such as artists, film makers or radio programmers as well as establish a relationship with these communities.

In conjunction with IDEM, a weekly event which exists to promote and foster the experimental music and audiovisual scene of Medellin. It is a free night, open to performers and the public. Its residence is the Circus nightclub, which offers the necessary infrastructures.

SELVATORIUM JUNGLE LABORATORY
21-30 June, 2007
Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia

A selection of foreign and Colombian artists will participate together in a 10 day laboratory in the city of Leticia and its surroundings in the Amazon. Selvatorium’s main objective is creating a meeting ground between the invited artists together with scientists and indigenous leaders. Round table discussions will be organized and the participants will have the opportunity to share and discuss their work. For the foreign guests as well as the Colombian urban artists this will be a unique opportunity to work and present their art in an environment different from a big city. We hope that this encounter will be a mind opener for the participants and serve to initiate interesting multidisciplinary creative processes.

Call for Participants / Collaborators

Pixelazo and Selvatorium events are currently being prepared by the voluntary efforts of individuals involved in Intermundos and Pixelache networks. Our collaborators in Colombia can offer resources and venues for realizing the project happen but unfortunately we currently don’t have funding for travel costs/fees of international guests. We hope to find international collaborators and participants who share our mission and can arrange to cover their travel costs to Colombia themselves.
