INTERFACING SOUND AND ROBOTICS
ixi + Host Productions
Mon 24 - Fri 28 Nov

A collaborative workshop led by: Thor Magnusson and Enrike Hurtado from ixi software with Andy Gracie from Host Productions.

Technologies Used: Director, Flash, Max/MSP, iCube, Pure Data, Supercollider, jMax, MIDI and OSC.

"The thing is that we've had a few workshops already and in some of them people have had degrees in quantum physics and PhD's in object oriented programming (gulp), and in others some people didn't even know how to record a sound sample into a computer. Basically, we adjust the content of the workshop to the level of the participants. We present people with ready-made code and help them to get started, it's a workshop of ideas and methods and not programming or specialist technology".
Thor Magnusson [ixi]

The ixi workshop is a short but intensive course where participants engage with concepts and technologies related to the creation, design and production of experimental musical interfaces. For Ultrasound 2003 ixi are collaborating with Andy Gracie from Host Productions. Andy has been creating robotic creatures in his own work, and alternative interfaces for installation art. Andy's work 'Small Work for Robot and Insects' was recently shown in the second annual international 'ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show', at EYEBEAM Gallery in New York.

WORKSHOP CONTENT
+ Project Description - Participants propose projects either individually or in a group.

+ Introduction to ixi-software and Host Productions; philosophy and methodology.

+ Introduction to Max/MSP, Pure Data, Supercollider and jMax.

+ Introduction to building interfaces: Director, Flash, Java [virtual], iCube and other sensor technologies [physical].

+ Seminars and discussions about key aspects of design, such as interactivity, differences between traditional and virtual instruments, generative processes, digital sound, and making music with computers.

+ Projects - Participants work individually or in groups creating software that can be used as tools for music creation, installations or sound effects.

During the workshop participants will gain an understanding of different prototyping tools, both for physical and virtual interfaces [Director, Flash, Max/MSP, iCube] and for sound engine prototyping [Pure Data, Max/MSP, Supercollider, jMax]. Communication protocols connecting or interfacing the various environments are also explored [MIDI and OSC - Open Sound Control]. Thor and Enrike will present a selection of works by other artists made with these technologies and discuss the theoretical and aesthetic impact of the works. Andy will discuss his own work with robots and support the making of physical interfaces.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce the basics of these technologies, based on ixi's and Host Productions' experience of developing their own software, interfaces and robots, participating in festivals and conferences and working in academies and art institutions. Participants are encouraged to propose a small project to work on, either individually or in a group in order to confront real-world problems and concepts of the explored technologies.

Understanding involves practise, not just theoretical explanation. In order to get people started participants will have access to ready-made code samples for sound generation, filters, effects and communication channels. This code can easily be changed and adjusted to suit individual projects.

We do not focus on technical details relating to the physics of sound, or programming practises, but rather on how to use these programming environments for human expression. The workshop is about ideas, not technology.
