Ixi software is an experimental project involving a network of people interested in electronic music and musical instruments. The objective is to create playful and flexible interfaces which function like stand alone instruments. These tools are inspired by traditional instruments, but as the computer is an essentially different device than material like strings and wood, ixi tries to investigate what kind of workspace and material the computer provides for the modern instrument maker. The ixi software is concerned with creating software where the performer interacts directly with the sound - often represented as a visual object on the screen - but the tool runs on its own, creating unpredictable patterns and structures. The software is a collection of applications distributed free on the ixi website and downloaded by thousands of people, many of whom have become part of the ixi community.
