4. Beyond the Digital Divide

At its most straightforward, speaking of a 'digital divide' is the acknowledgement that wealth affects access to communication and that no infrastructures or services should be taken for granted. However, as Frederick Noronha points out in his introduction to this section, the idea of the digital divide - most often used to describe inequalities between the north and south of the globe - needs to be approached critically and made more complex. There is no single way that people are divided by inequality, and responsibility rests with all of us. Our project reports show how we can all become more critical and resourceful in the way that we consume and circulate goods, services and knowledge, building our own self-sufficiency, learning how to respond to different environments, and valuing all kinds of innovation.
