What kinds of public space exist in our cities? Who can use these spaces and how? Who controls the sounds we hear in public spaces? How is sound involved in the control and flow of spaces around us? How can we participate in the sonic life of our cities? What signals can we find and process and transmit?...

These pages contain some documentation of signal | process workshop on sound in public space at PixelACHE 2004, Helsinki, Finland. This workshop continued a collaboration between media and sonic arts at the Centre for Music & Technology and MUU Media artists association that has resulted in annual exhibitions of students work over the last two years. This time we extended the collaboration into a workshop/exhibition format involving local artists exploring the issue of sound in public space through site specific processes and engagements. We also joined up with members of the Transcultural Mapping / Locative Media workshop to realise... 2 workshops, in 1 venue, involving 7 organisations, and over 30 participants, from 8 countries, coordinated in Helsinki by 2 people (who didn't speak finnish)...
