For artists working with sound technologies 'signal processing' is a familiar concept which refers to the ways in which we mechanically or electronically manipulate a an audio signal to change the sounds we hear. But how is sound involved in the social processes and signals we send each other in public spaces? And what kinds of signal processing attenuate and amplify the flows of movement and information that emerge in different kinds of public spaces? - physical, municipal, networks and broadcast spaces...

signal | process brought together participants from different creative disciplines for an interdisciplinary workshop/exhibition exploring the issue of sound in public space through site specific processes and engagements. Starting with a one week intensive introduction to selected sound technolgies and techniques, and a thorough sonic exploration of specific locations in central Helsinki, the workshop went on to manifest sonic interventions into the urban soundscape during a two week period. The MUU gallery became a workspace and site for ongoing documentation and discussion about the publically situated projects. In the latter stages of the workshop we also be collaborated with Kiasma Museum, pixelACHE 2004 festival and participants of the Locative Media workshop exploring related themes and spaces.

The Locative Media workshop also held during pixelACHE 2004 Festival was the first event in the series of 6 "Trans-Cultural Mapping" workshops initiated by RIXC Centre for New Media (Riga, Latvia). Each workshop will has a specific focus on outskirts and inter-regional networking in the context of an enlarged Europe. Additionally aiming to discover specific, deep and relevant layers of the local cultures, involving specific local communities in the process.

Locative media may be understood to mean media in which context is crucial, in that the media pertains to specific location and time, the point of spatio-temporal 'capture', dissemination or some point in between. The term locative media has also over the last year been associated with mobility, collaborative mapping, and emergent forms of social networking.
