Centre for Music & Technology presents: ÄÄNIRADIO

ääniradio

ääniradio is over for this year...back in april 2005...

A public experiment

ÄÄNIRADIO is an experiment in public broadcasting.
Staff and students from media & sonic arts at the Sibelius Academy's Centre for Music & Technology are learning about new ways to make radio. During the first two weeks of august broadcasts will begin gradually while they experimenting with connecting all kinds of spaces by with and through radio ready for a launch on 13th of august of the ISEA2004 festival broadcast. They will be teaming up with artists visiting the International Symposium of Electronic Art for 10 days of intensive radio mayhem and from around Helsinki around the baltic region and around the world... in which you are invited to participate..

A new kind of radio broadcast

ÄÄNIRADIO is an experiment in bringing together different approaches to making and broadcasting radio programs from traditions of net radio and FM community radio that aims to explore new approaches to low budget community and creative radio projects. Dispensing with some of the tools of traditional radiomaking in favour of internet collaboration and distribution will enable ÄÄNIRADIO to bring something very different to the FM dial in helsinki during august 2004.

Open Content Programming Policy

ÄÄNIRADIO programming is based largely on open content. This means that everything we broadcast must be licensed for free broadcast. As much as possible the programming on ÄÄNIRADIO will be licensed under copyleft, creative commons or other open content licenses. We will also broadcast work which the the copyright holder is able to license to us directly for this broadcast. This is a very new approach to radio programming and may result in some unusual sounds coming out of your radio. do not adjust your set.

What you won't hear on ÄÄNIRADIO

On ÄÄNIRADIO you won't hear any of the music you already find on your FM dial. Because of our open content policy we won't be broadcasting anything that normally requires paying copyright collection fees. These fees, collected by agencies such as TEOSTO are supposed to guarantee musicians, composers and publishers some income from the enjoyment of their music. We do not believe in undermining the livelyhood of artists who may depend on copyright fees by asking them to let us broadcast their stuff for free, so we will only be broadcasting the work of artists already integrated into an economy of free music.

What you will hear

Creative and collaborative broadcast projects from the International Symposium of Electronic Art such as Radioqualia's Radio Astronomy project which will bring you the sounds of jupiter, the sun and other celestial delights from radio telescopes around the globe. ÄÄNIRADIO will also feature several broadcasts from 'where are we eating?' a global sonic feast including Grilli Radio in Helsinki.
In addition we look forward to inviting creative broadcasters, both locally and internationally to contribute to ÄÄNIRADIO.

How you can participate

There are many ways to get involved with this project locally or remotely. From volunteering to help run the broadcast, or to help make programs through to participating in the shows from your telephone. If you have ideas or curiosity and would like to speak to us about participating in some way then send an email to aaniradio(at)siba.fi.
